MASSIVE REVIEW: The Saw Franchise

Hello people visiting Chainsaw Cinema,

I'm back after having some computer troubles and I want to apologize massively for having to put up with Loan for that long (just kidding). To make up for that fact I'm doing this massive review of every single Saw movie. There are 7 Saw movies meaning that this might become a very long post, to make things easier for everyone you can click on the link down below to expand the post.

Saw (2004)

IMDB rate: 7,7
Genre: Survival, Serial Killer
Starring: Leigh Whannell, Cary Elwes, Danny Glover

The Saw movies, once started as an excellent survival movies, only to turn out to be the shittiest franchise of this decade.

This is by far the best Saw movie, at this point it's even more a thriller rather than a horror movie. The movie is brilliant and it was quite refreshing at that time. Unfortunately, it was too much of a success and then there were the six sequels...
The first two sequels were not even that bad, they were completely different, and it seemed to go the torture way rather than the survival way, but after that... the whole story is messed up, every part brings something new in it that interfere with everything that happened in the previous parts. I don't even know which parts I've seen after the third part, mainly because they were all the same and all very confusing. I will find out when I finished watching them all, but I guess the last movies will be a drag to watch.

Two men, Dr. Laurence Gordon and Adam, wake up at opposite sides of a dirty, disused bathroom, chained by their ankles to pipes. Between them lies a dead man loosely clutching a hand-held tape player and a handgun. Each finds a tape the perfect fit for the player in their back pocket. They play the tapes. One is threatened, the other isn't. But they have a task: One must kill the other by 6:00, or the wife and daughter of Dr. Gordon will die. They find hacksaws in a toilet, and try to cut the chains, but it doesn't work. They are the two newest victims of the Jigsaw Killer. In a flashback, we learn of Amanda, a girl who falls victim to the Jigsaw Killer. On her head is a mask, which is hooked into her lower jaw. There is a timer on it. Only one key will unlock it, and that key is in the digestive tract of her cell mate who lies paralyzed on the opposite side of the room. If she doesn't unlock the mask in time, her lower jaw will be ripped wide open. She survives, but her cell mate doesn't. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn of more victims, and of the nearly-succesful capture of the Jigsaw Killer, who doesn't actually kill his victims. Instead he finds ways to make them kill either themselves, or each other, and he thinks the entire 'game' out perfectly, with no way out. Or so it would seem.

This movie is absolutely brilliant. The actual story is only setting of in a bathroom, the rest you see is a flashback. There are also some short scenes where you see the kidnapper of Dr. Gordon's wife and daughter and you see what he does to them, but the main story is mainly in the bathroom. It's kinda awesome that you can make a movie that simple, and yet so good.

While the other Saw movies are mainly focusing on the torture, this movie has a really good build up story. It has many dialogue and actually there is not much happening until the very last few minutes. The scene where Dr. Gordon was forced to amputate his leg was simply brutal. It looked so real and he acted it so well. Adam's reaction to this was priceless. Unfortunately, a scene this good will never be reached again in any of the Saw movies. It's a shame they've kept trying it for so long, because it's impossible to out top this masterpiece.

This movie is not a typical scary movie. It has some gore and such in it, but it's not evolving around that. It has a few scary scenes in it though. For example, the scene where the kidnapper is crawling behind the car with the pig mask on, that image was more scary than everything else that will happen in this movie or the following Saw movies. A good jump scare was when Adam was bringing light in his room with the flash of his camera, and when the pig face mask suddenly showed up. Seriously, I don't scare easily, but when I saw this scene for the first time, my heart had jumped up so much that it felt like it was floating around in my head.

The acting in this movie is very good. The most familiar actor is of course Danny Glover, and his part was not even the biggest in this movie. Nor does it need to be of course, since all the other actors were brilliant themselves as well. The only bothering actress was the little girl. She reminded me a lot of Dakota Fanning in War of the Worlds, that scene where she kept screaming. Well, the little girl in this movie didn't scream or anything, but she kept repeating herself, which was kinda annoying.

The music in this movie fits it so well. It has that scary but mysterious tone to it. It became the typical Saw music, but in my opinion it does not fit the other movies that well, because there is not much mystery going on in it.

I really recommend watching this movie, if you haven't seen it yet. But please don't bother watching the next ones if you thought this was 'too much' already. The first Saw movie is kinda comparable with Untraceable and Se7en. So if you like a good thriller, this movie is perfect.

My personal rate: 8

Saw II

IMDB rate: 6,6
Genre: Torture, Survival, Serial Killer
Starring: Tobin Bell, Donnie Wahlberg, Shawnee Smith

The first time I saw this movie I thought it wasn't that bad, but after there were released so many sequels it somehow had an effect to the original movie and Saw II. I don't know why but knowing that Dr. Gordon comes back in Saw 7 is a bit a bummer. Anyway, I should be talking about the sequel so that's what I will start doing. This movie isn't that bad but I certainly don't enjoy it as much anymore as I did the first time. The story is reasonable, some parts don't really fit but that's forgivable. Most of the acting is good and the camerawork is great. The violence is a bit overdone, and a few of the actors are annoying as hell, but for a Saw movie, it's just a reasonable movie.

When detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) is called to a crime scene of a victim of Jigsaw, he finds a lead to the place where he is hidden. Once there, he realizes that Jigsaw trapped his son Daniel Matthews with three woman and four men in a shelter, and they are inhaling a lethal nerve gas. If they do not use an antidote within two hours, they will die. Eric follows with increasing desperation the death of each member of the group in monitors, while trying to convince Jigsaw to release his son.

As I already said, some of the actors were quite annoying. Like Xavier, he was the 'badass' of the prisoners and is constantly trying to prove his toughness. In the beginning it was understandable but after a while his role became really annoying. Also, why did he need to kill Jonas? He only needed the number on the back of his head, so why not tell and ask him to turn around? No he will just smash his head in because he's just that badass.

Also, did nobody notice that everybody is getting weaker and keep on coughing except Amanda? It was quite obvious that she was perfectly fine, even after she was thrown in the hole with needles she only bled a bit, but that's all. Also, she seems to be the only one that finds clues, and figures everything out. It was quite obvious that she was part of Jigsaw's plan.

The torturing is becoming a bigger part in this movie. Not as bad yet as in the next coming Saw movies, but still a bit more than the first Saw movie.
It's a bit weird because it's said that Jigsaw gives them a chance but if there are two antidotes in an oven and by getting the second one the oven is set on fire it's a bit weird, since they don't have a chance to get out in that case. He will burn to death and nobody else is getting better because of that. Or like what's shown in the picture above, even if she didn't mess the antidote up, she would never have a chance to get out of that device without bleeding to death, so she never had a chance anyway. I also noticed this in the first movie, Amanda needed to kill the other person so she could get out, so that was her chance, but what about the life of the other person? Why didn't he get a chance? It's all a bit vague, but perhaps I will find out in one of the sequels ;) (I don't think so).

The thing I liked about this movie was when they arrived at the bathroom. It was kinda cool that they returned back there, with a sawn off foot and a dead Adam. I also liked it that you heard samples of the previous movie while they showed things in the bathroom. It was a short flashback and it gave a cool effect. Another cool scene was when Eric Matthews arrived at the house and they switched back and forth between the 'group' but in a way that you couldn't tell if it was at the same moment or not.

I was a bit sad to find out that now Eric Matthews is locked up in the bathroom. This way it can go on forever of course. Well, it will go on forever but from what I can remember they won't show the bathroom anymore, but I'm not sure about that so I'll have to find out in these weeks ;). At this point I don't know yet. I do know that not much of this movie fits together. Why did nobody look for Adam, Detective David Tapp or Dr. Gordon? I can't imagine it would take that long to find the place. At least, if you look at Adam in this movie, it seems like it has been a while. There are so many things that I wonder about, and I can look around to find the answer but I'm still hoping to find all the answers eventually when I've seen all the Saw movies.

All together, this movie isn't too bad compared to the sequels, but it's still not good. The story does not fit together and some of the actors were not that good, but there were also good things in this movie like when the camera switched between Eric Matthews and Xavier, Daniel and Amanda. I'm not sure if I can recommend it, since my thought about it are a bit mixed. Anyway, it full of blood but this movie is not as bad as the sequels yet. This movie is not all about torturing yet, so I guess it's watchable.

My personal rate: 5,5

Saw III

IMDB rate: 6,2
Genre: Torture, Survival, Serial Killer
Starring: Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Angus Macfayden

I've already seen this movie a few times and I'm not sure what to think of it. As a Saw movie it's terrible, but as a normal torture/serial killer/survival movie it's reasonable I guess. If you're really fond of torture, gore and such then this movie is quite reasonable. It's nothing special, but the effects look amazing and the story is reasonable too. But since it is a Saw movie we have to look at it another way since it's a sequel and not an alone standing movie.

The first time I saw this movie I was quite impressed, back then, it was the first time I saw a movie like this and I was amazed by it. It contained so much cruelty and torture and I didn't see anything like this before so as you can imagine, it was quite something. Compared with the previous Saw movies, this is the one where the real torturing starts. In the previous ones it was only a 'mild' form of torture while in this movie it seems to be all about torture. You see very device in detail and when the torturing starts, you see everything. I think this movie is acceptable compared with the next coming movies, it's too much and it's going way too far, but it's acceptable. It was not necessary to make but there where still a lot of questions left from the previous movies. They should have stopped after this movie, but of course, it has an open ending and only a few questions have been answered so unfortunately, we have to keep on watching.

Jeff is an anguished man, who grieves and misses his young son that was killed by a driver in a car accident. He has become obsessed for revenge against the man and reckless with his wife and daughter. When Dr. Lynn Denlon, who has troubles with her marriage, is abducted by the deranged Jigsaw's apprentice Amanda, she is brought to a gruesome warehouse to keep John Kramer alive in spite of having a terminal brain tumor. Amanda puts a necklace gadget full of explosives around Dr. Lynn's neck connected to John Kramer's life support system, and tells her that if he dies the device will explode. Meanwhile, Jeff is submitted to a sick game of forgiveness with surprising dark consequences.

The acting is a lot better in this movie than in Saw II. Unfortunately, all the great characters are being killed in this movie so I'm afraid about seeing Saw IV.

There is a lot of nasty things going on and while I've seen most of the Saw movies, these contained the most scenes that I can't forget about. The nastiest scene of all the Saw movies is definitely the one where Troy is attached with his body to chains. He needs to rip himself loose from the chains. I can watch a lot of stuff without looking away but this scene always makes my eyes twitch haha. It's disgusting. Also, the scene where all parts of the body is being rotated 360 degrees is terrible to watch. And of course, the pig juice scene. Yuk. This movie is definitely one of the nastiest movies I've ever seen.

There were a lot of things again that did not fit the story. Or gave a lot of new questions. Like the scene where Agent Kerry is in Jigsaw's game. Even when she got herself the key, she could not escape. I know that it was Amanda's plan but why did Jigsaw not do anything about it? The whole point of Jigsaw's games are getting a second chance, but even then it was impossible for her to get away. And another thing, why did Agent Kerry even get in one of the games? She never did anything wrong, and was absolutely not a wrong human being. Maybe that she got a bit to close to catching Jigsaw but in that case she should have killed the entire police corps. It's getting a bit annoying that every time that you get to know a main character, they are being killed again. It's the typical never ending story of the Saw movies, constantly bringing new characters (or killers) in the movies. It's getting a bit predictable and annoying.

The movie was a bit slow, they filled up quite some time with slow motion scenes and especially the operation of Jigsaw took ages.

The things that I did like was seeing parts of Saw 1 again. We still don't know what happened with Dr. Gordon and I guess we'll have to wait till the last Saw movie to find out. Also, the woman in ice looked kinda cool. Every effect in this movie looks way too real and amazing, but unfortunately, that's the only  nice thing about this movie.

If you like torture movies than this is an excellent movie. It's filled with all kinds of torturing devices and the special effects look amazing. But don't watch it like a Saw movie because everything is only getting more confusing with all those story lines. I personally did not like this movie because it was slow and seemed a bit useless to me, the one thing that I did enjoy was seeing a whole level of cruelty in a horror movie, but this was mainly the first time I saw it.

My personal rate: 5/10

Saw IV

IMDB rate: 5,8
Genre: Torture, Survival, Serial Killer
Starring: Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Scott Patterson

This is all getting so confusing. I can't get over the fact that I still have to watch 3 more of these movies, movies that only make all the previous movies more confusing instead of clearer. This movie is already terrible compared to Saw III, so you can imagine how terrible it is.

The dialogues are so lame: 'What's his problem?' 'Everyone around him keeps dying.' Seriously, that's the best you could do? Isn't it obvious that he has a bit of a problem when he just saw his partner ripped apart? Not only was the dialogue terrible, the acting was awful too. The only reason I'm still watching is because I want to know if the story will even end at some point and if I will ever have all the answers I want. So I'm mainly waiting until I've seen Saw VII.

Jigsaw and his apprentice Amanda are dead. Now, upon the news of Detective Kerry's murder, two seasoned FBI profilers, Agent Strahm and Agent Perez, arrive in the terrified community to assist the veteran Detective Hoffman in sifting through Jigsaw's latest grisly remains and piecing together the puzzle. However, when SWAT Commander Rigg is abducted and thrust into a game, the last officer untouched by Jigsaw has but ninety minutes to overcome a series of demented traps and save an old friend or face the deadly consequences.

I literally have no idea anymore what they're trying to reach with all these Saw sequels. The more I see, the more terrible they get. And I still have three more to go...

Like I already mentioned, the dialogues are terrible and so is the acting. That's already terrible enough but what's even more important is the storyline. It just hops from one storyline to another. Now they're continuing Saw II again and small parts of Saw III, but the story one got more confusing while the movie was going.

The first problem with this movie is why Officer Rigg was even chosen to be part of Jigsaw's game. The reason Jigsaw gave for this is that he cares too much for saving people. Why would that even be a bad thing? At first Jigsaw was at least doing things to drug addicts and other bad people, but punishing a cop because he cares too much?! That's seriously the lamest excuse ever. Another thing is, when he (of course) did not make it to safe Eric, it was shown that it was because he shouldn't enter doors that aren't double checked. When the time is running out and you've already seen that many people die in 90 minutes time, you probably only care about saving Eric Matthews, and of course you open that door for doing that. Because any logical person will figure that he will die in those 10 seconds left, right? But no, that's bad because he should have double checked the door and he should be late, because that's what would have saved him. How incredibly un-logical is that.

It's one thing that the chosen victims don't really suit Jigsaw's own philosophy but his traps are only getting more difficult to escape from too. Trying to be a good cop is not a bad thing that he should be punished for. And trying not to save everybody else is not very logical when all the clues are leading him to the people that needed to be saved. He choose his job because he wanted to save people, what the hell is wrong with that?!

You also saw Jeff for a few seconds, yeah that's the guy from Saw III. He showed up, alive, asked where his daughter was and got shot. Of course, how original, a familiar character that didn't survive the movie. So that's another thing, you still don't know where the daughter is, and you also don't know if you will ever find out.

The typical Hollywood mistake, every cop is doing everything alone. Even officer Rigg hardly left clues where he went to and what happened. He could have asked for back-up since there was noboby who could stop him, but no, let's all do this alone. Or Agent Strahm, suddenly running off, alone, because he knew where Rigg was (he probably didn't tell anybody), and getting trapped in the building a few minutes later.
So what's the story now, Agent Strahm is trapped, might become another Jigsaw victim or will just never get out. Agent Rigg is shot but you don't know if he survived. Probably not. Agent Hoffman suddenly appears to be a Jigsaw helper so Saw V will probably tell his story how he became his accomplice.

Main thing is, it's all very predictable and it's getting very boring by now. I seriously don't understand how they ever came to the thought of making another sequel. All I can hope for now is that Saw V, Saw VI or Saw VII will be a lot less confusing and a lot less boring.

There are still many things that need to be figures out, here are a few:
  • What happened to Dr. Laurence Gordon?
  • What happened to Jeff's daughter?
  • Why was Kerry even chosen to be a Jigsaw victim?
I'm not even sure if I will ever find out but I'm hoping that I will, eventually.

The storyline was terrible, the acting was terrible and the dialogues were terrible. Hell, even the special effects weren't that special. I liked watching Saw III because it was so cruel and filled with torturing and special effects and such. Saw IV unfortunately doesn't even contain that. It has a bit of torturing, but it's very weak compared to what we saw in the previous movie.

I don't recommend watching this movie, I would just stop with watching at Saw II. Maybe if you like the special effects you could watch Saw III but I suggest that you shouldn't even start with watching that one. Saw IV makes the story only more complicated and not even slightly more interesting.

My personal rate: 3,5

Saw V

IMDB rate: 5,6
Genre: Torture, Serial Killer, Survival
Starring: Tobin Bell, Julie Benz, Meagan Good

I really don't see the use of this movie. It's really going to far and nothing fits anymore. Every time a new movie comes out the previous one becomes only more and more confusing because it seems like they keep adding and changing stuff. It's very obvious that the writers just did not know anymore what to do with the story. It was a boring movie, an useless movie and especially a confusing movie. I seriously don't understand why they even bothered to continue these movies.

Jigsaw and his young apprentice, Amanda, are dead. But the grisly games continue. 5 supposed strangers find themselves in the midst of the big game, and believe they are in a survival of the fittest competition. Via his now infamous video linked doll, Jigsaw conveys the message that they should ignore their instincts, and ignore his advice at their peril. Meanwhile, agent Strahm wants to prove that Hoffman is an apprentice to Jigsaw, and pursues him as he continues his twisted games. What Strahm does not realize is that Hoffman is testing him all along, and must pass his test in order to stay alive.

This is all getting so predictable, every time a new character is introduced in the previous movie it's certain that he will die in the sequel. It in every Saw movie and I'm just getting tired of it, they really need to come up with something new. An officer that does stay alive through all the Saw movies. This movie is Erickson introduced and I can almost say for sure that he will die in the next movie.

This was one of the most boring Saw movies that I've seen. The storyline sucked, it seemed like they just made something up. The people that are in the game this time are logical because they actual did something wrong but why test Strahm? Or in the previous movies, Rigg or Kerry? It's all nonsense. Watching this movie was an extreme drag because it lead to nothing eventually. After the movie had ended I could only think 'What was the use of this?'. It's just terrible.

Jigsaw's philosophy is that people need to have their second chance but none of his apprentices are actually following up that philosophy. Like when Amanda shot Lynn, who did finish the game and got killed afterwards, it's the same story in this movie, they almost don't have a chance to escape.

The movies are build up very confusing, first you see a scene where somebody is in a 'Jigsaw' trap which later appears to be set up by Hoffman instead of Jigsaw. This appeared to be way before the first movie. Also, Hoffman appeared to have helped Jigsaw by kidnapping the fat man in the first movie, in the razor blade trap. With all these flashbacks this movie is getting so confusing, because you don't know when something found place, and even when you think you finally have figured out they will change it in the next movie. Also, in every sequel there appear to be more and more flashbacks, so in fact, 1/2 of the movie is a part of the previous movie, so parts that you've already seen. This is to make it so called more logical but in fact it's only more and more confusing.

Also, how can Jigsaw predict every step they make. Human's nature is unpredictable but somehow Jigsaw knows exactly what they will do. This is in fact playing after he already died so you can imagine how much further he had to predict.

The traps in this movie were kinda lame, and they make those people look very dumb. First trap was actual not that strange that they thought they all needed their key, they could have tried but knowing Jigsaw it was not likely that one key fitted to all the locks. The second trap however was so incredibly stupid, it was so obvious that more people fitted in to the safe places. There could have easily fitted in two people in each hole. The third trap was also not that strange, it did look like they needed to kill someone so I'm agreeing with that. But then, the last one.... Oh this was so retarded. They should have taken the body from the previous room (the door was still open for a few minutes) and put her hand or something into the machine instead of their own. That way they would not have been hurt and the one that was already dead wouldn't mind I guess. It was just plain stupid. They could have at least tried to put a shoe in it or something, it's about weight I think, such a device can not feel if it's blood or not. Terrible.

I absolutely do not recommend watching this. It was a dumb movie. Terrible storyline, awkward acting and not even filled with blood. It's was quite tame for a Saw movie. Since the storyline was already terrible at least some gore could have make up for it, but even that was missing from this movie. All together, terrible movie, do not watch it.

My personal rate: 3

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Saw VI

IMDB rate: 5,9
Genre: Serial Killer, Survival, Torture
Starring: Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Mark Rolston

This movie was actually a bit better compared to the previous two movies. Don't get me wrong, it was still bad, but a bit better than I expected. There's still a lot confusing things going on, nothing got clearer and well, the movie still exist 1/2 from parts of the previous movies, so still nothing special or new. I actually counted this time how many times there were parts in it from the previous movies: 11 times! I get that they want to make things clearer but come on, every movie is filled with these previous scenes. It's kinda boring since we've seen them all, and it's actually not clearing up a whole lot. Kinda useless as you might understand. The movie itself was kinda noisy. A lot of screaming was going on and after a while it was bothering. Also the machines made a terrible noise so it was not pleasant to watch.

The body of Agent Strahm is completely smashed and destroyed and Detective Mark Hoffman frames him. Strahm is accused of being Jigsaw's apprentice and the FBI chases him. Dan Erickson calls Hoffman and he learns that Agent Perez did not die. When Dan finds a tape with the voice of the killer, he invites Hoffman and Perez to go with him to the laboratory to see the progress with the identification of the real voice. John's widow Jill Tuck receives a box from his lawyer with six envelops with instructions and she gives the first five to Hoffman. The unethical CEO of the Umbrella Health, William Easton, and his teams are abducted and William is forced to play a game and choose who will live or die to save his family and himself.

The story was somehow understandable, John didn't get money for his cancer treatment because of an unfair policy. So of course he attacks him back on the same way, I get it. Still, there are many people dying because of Jigsaw this way. Jigsaw wants to prove how unfair his policy is and he lets William Easton choose in terms of his policy. It's fair because this way he sees how cruel it is, but still it's strange because this way Jigsaw needs to sacrifice innocent people to perform this test. So Jigsaw is just as low as William in this case. Of course, Jigsaw is kinda low himself since he already killed tons of people but still.

The acting was not that great, which isn't that strange if you choose you actors on base of TV programs like 'Scream Queens'. The story is getting more and more difficult. In this movie you see that Jill did knew a lot of John's plans, which was kinda predictable. She even took part in some of the 'games' but well, you could have guesses that. It's only making things more complicated and if we need something in the Saw movies it's a bit clearance of the story. So if you ask me, stupid choice. I do like her better than Hoffman though, but I think it would've been better if the story still evolved around Amanda and Jigsaw instead of Hoffman and Jill and whoever still comes. I desperately hope we will get a lot of answers in the last Saw movie but I'm afraid that's false hope.

Okay, a discussion about the traps. Since the Saw movies are all about the traps it would be fun to discuss them. This contains spoilers!

The first scene you see the scream queen and a guy, their goal is to amputate parts of themselves and throw that in the scale. The first thing they do is of course amputating parts of themselves but what I do not understand is why they didn't threw in a shoe or something, it's only a scale, not some high tech balance which can identify what you throw in it. Also, what will the survivors learn by cutting of their arms of whatever. 'I cut of my arm because of a Jigsaw trap', now I can never do bad things anymore!'. It's all a bit lame.

The second trap was kinda lame, it was all about who could hold in their breath the longest. So the janitor is a smoker, who gives a shit? Obviously, the smoker died but why did Jigsaw choose this janitor? There are millions of bad people on this world and he chooses a innocent janitor only because he's close to William and by coincidence a smoker. Quite a lame trap.

The third ais again evolving around people who actually did nothing wrong, the third trap was stupid because those people actually didn't do anything wrong. The fourth one was a bit understandable, they had to search for errors in the requests, so they actually were part of William's policy, but still not that guilty.

There were still so many errors in this movie and it's too tiresome to discuss all of them so I won't. I still don't understand why the makers bothered to continue the series. The awesomeness from the first movie is long gone. This is probably leading nowhere but I will finish watching them.

I don't recommend watching this movie, it's kinda boring and mainly noisy. If you never saw any other movie than the first Saw movie then please don't ever bother to watch the rest.

Saw VII

IMDB rate: 5,5
Genre: Torture, Serial Killer, Survival
Starring: Tobin Bell, Cary Elwes, Betsy Russell

I'm glad I finally finished them all. Some of them were terrible to watch, some of them were better (read: less terrible). This movie is one of the terrible ones. I wanted to watch them all so I can honestly say that they were terrible, and not like some people who watched two or perhaps three movies and called them terrible. Sure, they were terrible, but you can only truly say that if you've seen them all, right? It's definitely not worth watching them all, but it was a fun little project for me and I was able to write quite a few reviews again, which is always fun.

I've actually expected the most from this movie since there were still so many unanswered questions, but unfortunately none of them were answered. Well one was but I already figured that one out. They could have make an excellent ending with this movie but they really messed it up.

Detective Matt Gibson chases the psychotic Detective Mark Hoffman while Jigsaw's widow Jill Tuck tries to kill him as assigned by her husband. However he escapes and Jill meets Gibson and offers to sign an affidavit listing the murders committed by Hoffman. In return, she requests protection. Meanwhile, the prominent Jigsaw survivor and leader of a support group Bobby Dagen is abducted with his wife and friends and forced to play a mortal game to save himself and his beloved wife.

The movie started of terrible. It started with two men and a woman caught in a Jigsaw trap. This trap was in the middle of a city and a lot of people were watching. Not only did it look ridiculous, it was also useless. When the trap ended it was also the last time you saw or heard of them. It was nonsense. They had absolutely no connection to Jigsaw and only because the girl cheated on them they were in the trap. Why were these guy even punished? The approach is completely different with this trap. Why in the middle of the city? What's the purpose of all those people watching? Public shaming perhaps, but I have no idea why. According to the voice it was not a Jigsaw trap but a Hoffman trap, but it still doesn't explain anything.

The whole storyline was messed up, another new cop is introduced and of course he is after Hoffman and this is going wrong, of course. The cop was an incredibly bad actor and of course he dies. Like every other cop in the Saw movies, so as you can imagine, it was kinda predictable. The acting is terrible and the whole movie is a drag to watch.

In this movie you find out that Dr. Gordon (from the first Saw movie) is still alive, and of course he is also a Jigsaw apprentice. The whole storyline is so confusing to follow. This movie is also filled with flashbacks that are supposed to explain his presence but all it did was deny all the previous movies and make the complete series confusing as hell.

A thing that I really disliked was seeing Chester Bennington in this movie. When I was young I was a huge fan of Linkin Park and I still enjoy listening to it, seeing one of my favorite singers in a shit movie like this is rather disappointing.

The traps in this movie are so dull, nothing cruel of whatever, sure it was a bit cruel but not what you're used to in these movies. The one good thing I liked about this movie was seeing familiar faces from the previous movies. You saw a few of the Jigsaw survivors which cleared up some parts, since it wasn't always clear if they survived or not. For example, in Saw V I was absolutely sure the guy died and well, he appeared in this movie so I guess he didn't ;).

Unfortunately this was a terrible ending for the Saw movies. It could have been a lot better with the presence of Dr. Gordon but unfortunately they messed it up. It's sad that they even continue these movies after the first one because the first one is just brilliant. Everything that came afterwards is terrible. Maybe Saw II and Saw III were passable, they were not that terrible and had a good torture rate, which made it a fun movie. Everything that came afterwards should have never been made.

Watching the Saw movies that come after the first one are definitely not worth watching. Now I've seen them all I can finally honestly say that they are terrible. I'm glad I finished watching them because now I'll never watch another one, besides perhaps the first one, ever again.

My personal rate: 3/10

  1. A shady company called Umbrella eh? the plot thickens XD
but yeah, I hate this franchise, i really liked the first two movies and I agree that the 3th is passable, but the rest is just everything I hate about shallow torture porn movies.
    Great review though :D
